Shakespeare Page & Stage Workshop

  • Broad Brook Community Center 3940 Guilford Center Road Guilford, VT 05301 USA (map)

Have you ever wanted to learn Shakespeare? Or try out acting?

We have a fun workshop series coming to the BBCC - starting April 23rd (Shakespeare’s Birthday!) at 7:30pm! If you’ve ever wanted to learn some Shakespeare, this is for you!

This approach combines acting and academics: the group will study a piece of Shakespeare's work on the page and then work it out on the stage. This workshop will explore a small piece of Shakespeare and perform it at the end, just for participants. (Though you can also observe if you’re stage-shy.)

In Shakespeare’s day, shows didn’t have directors as we know them. That left actors to figure out how to play the roles themselves. Shakespeare wrote his scripts with clues and subtle road maps in the text for the actors to pick up what he wanted.

This first workshop will focus on Hamlet’s 3.1 address to the Players: “Speak the speech, I pray you...” which will help us uncover what might’ve been Shakespeare’s notes to his own performers.

Attendees will learn some performance techniques and some comprehension tricks. Script excerpts and take-home material will be provided. Please RSVP to attend as space is limited!

Presented by Kelly Burr, Founder of Ground Up Shakespeare and Scene 24 Productions.

(Academically published as Kelly Nelsen-Pedersen) Kelly holds a master’s degree from The Shakespeare Institute in Stratford-Upon Avon, U.K. where her concentration was on gender roles in Shakespeare’s work.
