Love Letters - Dinner Theater

Love Letters - Dinner Theater

Guilford Center Stage opens its 2025 season with the 1988 two-character play," Love Letters", by A. R. Gurney.  The play was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for Drama. This Friday night performance also includes a special dinner option provided by the Broad Brook Community Center Board. The performance on Friday, February 14th, Valentine's Day, will be preceded by a 5:30 pm romantic dinner in the downstairs dining room of the Community Center, followed by the play in the theater upstairs and dessert afterwards. Registration and menu options for the dinner below.

This epistolary play centers on two characters, Melissa Gardner and Andrew Makepeace Ladd III, lifelong friends and ... lovers?  The characters take turns, during the play, reading the cards, notes and letters they wrote to each over the past half-century.

The Guilford performances take place, appropriately, on Valentine's weekend. An interesting, and romantic, feature of this production is that each of the three performances will be given by a different pair of actors, each of which is a real-life couple: Friday, February 14, "Love Letters" will be performed by Evelyn and Don McLean, of Guilford, frequent participants in the work of this theater group.  The Saturday, February 15th show will be performed by Gay and James Maxwell, of Brattleboro, well-known area actors.  The Sunday matinee on the 16th will feature actress Christopher Coutant and her husband, Michael Kennedy, both of whom have appeared in and directed many stage productions in the region.

"LOVE LETTERS" is presented by special arrangement with Broadway Licensing, LLC, servicing the Dramatists Play Service collection (www.dramatyists.com).  "LOVE LETTERS" was presented at The Long Wharf Theatre, November 4, 1988 - December 11, 1998, M. Edgar Rosenbaum, Executive Director, Arvin Brown, Artistic Director.

Pre-Town Meeting

Broad Brook Grange in collaboration with the Guilford Selectboard will hold the annual Pre-Town Meeting on Thursday, February 20, 6:30 pm.

The event will be live-streamed on BCTV, but those interested in participating should attend at Broad Brook Community Center. Town Meeting Moderator, Rick Zamore, will facilitate the February 20 session.

Town Meeting itself will convene at 10am on Saturday, March 1, at Guilford Central School, a change in date voted at last year’s Town Meeting. Per Vermont Statute, Australian balloting will still be held on the Tuesday following, March 4, to elect town officers, with polls open at the Broad Brook Community Center from 10 am - 7 pm.

At the Pre-Town Meeting, the select-board will present and discuss the articles to be voted at Town Meeting, and will answer questions and receive comments from townspeople present.

In addition, candidates for town offices are urged to attend to introduce themselves to the voters. This is the only time before the vote for the public to meet and hear the candidates together. One of the terms for Guilford representative to the WSESD School Board is up for election this year; voters will also cast ballots for reps from the other district towns, and candidates are invited to attend Pre-Town Meeting to introduce themselves and answer questions.

Those interested in declaring as a write-in candidate should take this sole opportunity to appear before a group of voters. Guilford’s reps to the WSESD Board will also be on hand to talk about school board business.

Refreshments will be served. We hope to see you there!

Community Essentrics Class

Join certified Essentrics Instructor Kelly DiIonno for a rejuvenating six-week Essentrics class and give your body the gift of movement. Whether you’re looking to stretch tight muscles, boost your energy, or simply unwind, this class will help you feel restored and ready to take on the weekend.

What is Essentrics? Essentrics is a functional movement program that focuses on strengthening the muscles in a lengthened position. It works all 650 muscles and 360 joints by using full body sequences interspersed with targeted body sequences to re-balance the entire body and unlock tight joints.

Essentrics is influenced by the flowing, strengthening and healing movements of tai chi, dance and physiotherapy. It improves posture, increases energy, and reduces pain by improving the range of motion through dynamic movement. This class is geared towards all ages and is a great program for athletes looking for more flexibility, people just beginning their fitness journeys, and for those recovering from injuries.

Come to one class or attend all six! This class is open to all, cost is $10 per class, or $50 for the full six week series. Venmo, cash, and checks accepted.

Green Up Day

Green Up Day

On Saturday, May 3rd, join fellow Vermonters in this unique, statewide volunteer event to clean up our neighborhood roads. This is an opportunity for us to work together as a community and focus on a common goal -- cleaning up our Guilford roads. If you can volunteer even for an hour or two to pick up roadside litter, it will make a huge difference!

Stop by the BBCC from 8am - 5pm on Saturday May 3rd. We will have Green Up trash bags and reflective vests for volunteers to pick up, and the dump trucks will be parked there until 5pm to receive all the roadside trash you can gather in your bags. Note that you can also pick up Green Up trash bags ahead of time at the Town on any day they are open (Monday through Thursday, 7am - 5pm).

There will also be a map where you can sign up for a road to clean. For more information on Green Up Day events throughout the state, and the history of Green Up Day in Vermont, please visit greenupvermont.org.

We expect a range of topics including health and fitness, loneliness, communication with family, and change. Join fellow seniors and share and receive helpful insights and ideas.

Fall Prevention Tai Chi

This class introduces the Tai Chi for Fall Prevention sequence starting from the very beginning. Regularly practicing the slow, rhythmic movements of Tai Chi smooths out stiff joints, improves balance, and promotes a sense of well-being. The class specifically improves balance and confidence in movement in a safe, easy-to-master program that one can do even seated, if necessary. This program benefits anyone from age 50 upward interested in maintaining their vitality.

Instructor, Leah Gessner, is certified by Tai Chi Vermont, a non-profit organization that promotes the Falls Prevention Tai Chi program and trains instructors throughout the state. Guilford Cares does not charge for these classes. (Of course, Guilford Cares always welcomes donations.)

You only need some comfortable loose clothing and a yen for adventure. You will find yourself in the company of welcoming neighbors enjoying oiling up their joints, rejuvenating muscle tone, and laughing some in the process.

Call Guilford Cares if you have questions, their number is (802) 579-1350
